Frequently Asked Questions

What is Team Diabetes Canada?

Team Diabetes Canada is an adventure fundraiser where participants choose to complete a marathon, triathlon, mountain bike trek or adventure racing event to raise money for diabetes and the Canadian Diabetes Association. The program brings dynamic Canadians together to create awareness for the work of the Association and to emphasize the importance and benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

What is the goal of Team Diabetes Canada?

Team Diabetes Canada creates awareness for the work of the Canadian Diabetes Association and raises much needed funds for diabetes research, education, service and advocacy. Studies have shown that type 2 diabetes may be delayed or prevented with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Team Diabetes Canada participants demonstrate the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

How does Team Diabetes Canada work?

Participants sign up with Team Diabetes Canada, choosing to race in one of four events and committing to raising a baseline amount in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. In return, the Association provides support and benefits to help them achieve their goal of a lifetime. Team Diabetes Canada members can participate in:

Running or walking in world-class international marathons
Mountain Bike Races
Adventure Races (five, eight or 36-hour) – Co-ed teams of four navigate a race course by trekking, paddling, biking and fourth method to be determined
Ironman Canada Triathlon – 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike followed by a full marathon (26.2 miles or 42.2 km)
Cross Country Skiing events

Who participates in Team Diabetes Canada?

Participants come from all across Canada and from all walks of life; some have diabetes themselves, while others are simply eager to prove themselves while supporting a good cause. Team Diabetes Canada allows participants the opportunity to take on a challenge they likely wouldn’t attempt on their own.

Many Team Diabetes Canada participants are first-time supporters of the Canadian Diabetes Association – and first-time sport enthusiasts. Of our marathon participants, 70% are first time marathoners. In Fiscal 2004, the program is on target to raise more than $1.5 million.

Why are these events so popular?

Team Diabetes Canada allows our participants to do something that they probably wouldn’t do on their own. They want to give back to their community and help others, while challenging themselves to get fit and achieve a remarkable personal goal. The events give people the opportunity to train with other people who share the same aspirations. A full 70% of our marathon participants are first-timers, coming to Team Diabetes Canada at all different fitness levels and age groups. They are often very focused on their goal, and either already lead a healthy lifestyle or want to lead one.

How much from every donation to Team Diabetes Canada benefits the Canadian Diabetes Association?

Approximately 60 cents of every dollar goes to support the Canadian Diabetes Association. The Association’s mission is to promote the health of Canadians through diabetes research, education, services and advocacy. The Association is very fortunate: many Team Diabetes Canada members raise funds beyond their goal.

How much money has Team Diabetes Canada raised?

Team Diabetes Canada has generated more than $4.5 million since its inception in 1999.
