Before I started weight training, I was a high-level
endurance athlete...145 lbs soaking wet
- I could rip out a triathlon without even training
for it...
Once I started
using these mass principles to CHANGE my body's physiology
to maximize muscle mass...well...I carry a bit more
muscle now...

So how can you change YOUR body's physiology
to SHATTER your genetic muscle-building limitations?
In my experience,
there are FIVE "SCIENTIFIC MASS PRINCIPLES"
for improving your rate of muscle growth.
These principles
are the things you have the power to CHANGE about
your own physiology that will have an IMMEDIATE
effect on your muscle mass and strength levels.
MASS PRINCIPLE #1
Build a STRONGER Frame!
How
much additional muscle mass do you think you could hang
on your frame if your frame was a whole lot thicker
and a whole lot stronger? LOTS MORE MUSCLE MASS!
If you want
to build the biggest, strongest house possible, you
have to look at the foundation and frame of your house.
In the case of your body, the foundation and frame is
your bones and connective tissue (tendons, ligaments
and fascia).
Bones
and connective tissue are what provide the structure
and support for everything that happens to your
house.
Most training
programs, while potentially being effective at adding
muscle mass, usually do nothing to specifically
address your bones and connective tissue. To make your
frame as tough as battleship steel, you MUST use specific
techniques and exercises that work DIRECTLY on strengthening
your bones and connective tissue as a major goal.
After all,
how well do you think your house will stand up to the
toughest conditions if your foundation is gravel and
your frame is made of broomsticks? Not so good.
You need
a frame and foundation that is as thick as concrete
and tough as airplane cable.
And yet for
something that is SO basic to your overall strength
and muscle mass, have you ever asked somebody in the
gym what they're working today and have them tell you
"I'm trying to strengthen my tendons and ligaments?"
BOTTOM
LINE:
You
can add tremendous muscle mass with a
stronger frame and foundation.
And that's
without even without even mentioning
the practically INSTANT muscle growth
you'll get when you immediately start
handling more weight in ALL your
exercises because your connective tissue
is so much stronger!
Plus, just
USING that much weight and putting that
much tension on the muscles is EXCELLENT
to spur additional growth!
(This exercise
is the Lockout Partial Squat...you'll
notice I'm just working the top few inches
of the range of motion, which allows for
MASSIVE amounts of weight - 950 lbs in
this case! - to be piled on to really
strengthen connective tissue effectively)
MASS PRINCIPLE #2
Give Your Muscles Room To Grow!
Remember
that fascia that I mentioned when I was talking about
connective tissue? Fascia is essentially strong sheets
of connective tissue that enclose your muscles (it's
in a lot of other places, too, but we're going to focus
only on the stuff around your muscles). I like to describe
it as a pillowcase of connective tissue that surrounds
your muscles and keeps them from flopping around.
So how does
fascia fit in with our house?
Well, imagine
that this fascia is actually the outside walls of your
house. The outside walls are stronger than the interior
walls because they have to help support the structure
of the house.
But now you've
just bought new furniture (think of this part as building
muscle mass). You bring it in the house and set it up.
No problem. But then you want to go out and get some
more (which is building yet MORE muscle). The
house/muscle is starting to fill up but THE WALLS AREN'T
GETTING ANY BIGGER.
Where
does the furniture/muscle go when the walls don't get
any bigger? Nowhere. Muscle growth
stops because the muscle has nowhere to expand TO.
Now what
do we do? If the muscles have no room to grow, THEY
WON'T GROW.
Simple. Your
training should work to expand those walls
by stretching out the fascia, giving your muscles that
room to grow.
If you're
familiar with fascial stretching, you probably already
know what I'm talking about here. Fascial stretching
is basically training a muscle, filling it up with blood,
then stretching it HARD. The purpose of this is to "wiggle"
the fascia, expanding it little by little to give that
muscle room to grow.
Buy here's
something you may NOT know and it can make a HUGE difference
in our quest to SHATTER your muscle-building limitations...
stretching the fascia WHILE YOU'RE ACTUALLY TRAINING,
not just while stretching after training, can
be even MORE effective for expanding those walls!
It's the
difference between just stretching and stretching
with ADDED RESISTANCE. What do you think is going
expand the fascia more and give your muscles more room
to grow?
BOTTOM
LINE:
A
HUGE factor in your genetic "limitations"
could be just that your muscles simply
don't have any room to grow! More room
means MORE muscle.
MASS PRINCIPLE #3
Feed Those Muscle Cells!
So we've
strengthened your foundation and frame and made room
to expand your house...we've already added a
whole lot of muscle-building potential right there...what's
next?
Do you start
putting up the walls and installing cabinets? In a standard
program, this is like going directly to training for
muscle mass. You start putting up the walls without
a second thought about the plumbing, ventilation and
electrical systems!
If you've
ever lived in a house or have ever been indoors, you
know these things are kind of important...
So plumbing,
ventilation and electrical systems...what do those mean
for changing your body's physiology? Well, think of
plumbing and ventilation as your circulatory system....your
blood supply...your blood supply that carries oxygen
and vital muscle-building nutrients TO your muscle cells
and waste products and carbon dioxide AWAY from your
muscle cells.
Obviously,
everybody has a circulatory system. I'm not going to
argue on that one. But here's the difference...how
many people have EFFICIENT circulatory systems that
MAXIMIZE the amount of nutrients and oxygen that can
get to your muscle cells (and quickly!)?
Have any
muscle groups that pump up more easily than others?
Everybody does. Do those muscles tend to grow faster
than the ones that don't? All signs point to yes. What's
the deciding factor here? Blood supply.
BOTTOM
LINE:
The
muscles that have a BETTER blood supply
pump up more easily and grow faster
because they're able to get MORE NUTRIENTS
AND OXYGEN to fuel and repair them.
So
your NEXT training goal, if you want to
force SLABS of extra muscle mass
onto your body, is to improve the blood
supply to your muscles, getting them more
nutrients and oxygen.
Imagine if, with the right training, you
could alter the physiology of your "hard-to-pump"
muscles and make them EASY to pump? Greater
blood supply equals greater potential
MUSCLE GROWTH NOW.
And that electrical system I mentioned? That's your
nervous system. The same training that gets the job
done on improving the blood supply is also going to
teach your nervous system how to fire the muscle
fibers FASTER.
Elite powerlifters
have training days where they use sub-maximal weight
and lift as fast as possible in order to train for explosiveness.
This training is going to wire your nervous system to
fire and fire FAST, helping you build power.
MASS PRINCIPLE #4
Hyperplasia Equals MORE Muscle Fibers To Grow!
One word.
Hyperplasia. The
splitting of individual muscle fibers into new
muscle fibers. And more fibers means more potential
muscle growth!
It's the
"Holy Grail" of muscle building - nobody
has really proven it happens in humans (though it's
been proven to happen in other animals when placed under
extreme conditions), but also nobody has ever proven
that it DOESN'T happen in humans, either!
Back to our
house anaolgy, it's like chopping your building materials
in half and having them magically grow back to their
original size! This allows you to instantly build a
bigger house.
But here's
the deal...like I mentioned above, nobody has ever proven
that this sort of thing happens in humans. To be quite
honest, proving it would be tremendously difficult.
You have
to subject the body to a training stimulus intense and
long enough in duration to cause the fibers to split...THEN
you have to actually physically COUNT the fibers to
see if there are more than when you started!
Tough to
do.
But don't
write it off just yet...
BOTTOM
LINE:
I'll
tell you right now...with
the right training, I believe you CAN
achieve hyperplasia.
And if you can SPLIT your muscle fibers,
you will instantly SKYROCKET your muscle-building
potential.
I'm
NOT going to tell you that it'll be easy...it
would be TOUGH training because you really
have to hit the muscles EXTREMELY HARD
to get fibers to split.
Most
programs don't even come close to achieving
this threshold of volume, intensity and
tension! But, in my research in looking
at the training protocols the scientists
used to achieve hyperplasia in animals,
I STRONGLY believe
there IS a training technique that can
do it in humans...
And
I even think I know what it is...
And,
let me tell you right now, if you LOVE
hard training, you are going to LOVE
this training technique...it allows
you to train at high intensity AND
with high volume...a rare combination
that most programs have to stay FAR away
from.
MASS PRINCIPLE #5
How To Eat For SERIOUS MASS!
So we've
build our house with a strong foundation and frame,
the walls have expanded, the plumbing, ventilation and
electric is installed and operating at peak efficiency,
we've doubled our building materials...we're ready
to BLAST that muscle on...so what's left!
What's left
is not training, but nutrition!
And
this last principle is EXTREMELY powerful
- it sets the stage for EVERYTHING I've talked
about previously.
The food
you eat (and how much of it you eat!) can have drug-like
effects on your body. So our final item towards blowing
your your genetic limitatations out of the water by
changing your physiology is to set up your training
and nutrition to FORCEFULLY AMPLIFY
the effects of each other.
The best
way to do this is to apply what I call a "Nutritional
Slingshot" to your body that is going to first
pull you back (by allowing only VERY specific foods
and very specific AMOUNTS of that food) then release
and practically EXPLODE you towards muscle-building!
This nutritional
technique I'm thinking of is not a big hush-hush secret...at
it's most basic, it's taking you from a strict low-carb,
lower-calorie diet to a generous higher-carb, higher-calorie
diet (and, of course, I know a few unique wrinkles that
will REALLY maximize the impact of this technique!).
BOTTOM
LINE:
When
you re-load carbs and calories, the nutrients
come ROARING into your muscles like a
dry sponge sucking up water, FORCING your
muscles to expand!
And
your muscle-building hormones (like insulin
and testosterone) FLARE
UP AND RAGE like gasoline on a
fire!
THIS
is what is going to REALLY help
you get drug-like effects from the food
you eat. I don't care how "genetically-challenged"
you are...your body has NO CHOICE but
to pile on the muscle when you apply this
technique properly.
Your
"NEW" physiology simply DEMANDS
IT.
So
THESE are the five big "Scientific Mass Principles"
that are going to BLAST you past your genetic limitations!
How do you put them all together?
Well, bottom line, as you can see with
the principles I described your
genetics are NOT ENTIRELY TO BLAME for seemingly impassable
plateaus in muscle and strength. Your physiology,
meaning your bones, connective tissue, blood circulation,
etc., have probably never been specifically
addresssed and ATTACKED in your training
before!
This leaves a LOT of room for you to
GROW...with, of course, THE RIGHT TRAINING PROGRAM.
Now, you could certainly try and adapt
the training programs you already know to work with
these concepts. You could even research each concept
individually and try and put something together yourself...
But why
do all that work when I'VE GOT THE PROGRAM ALREADY
DONE.
In fact,
I've got it done and I've tested it MANY TIMES OVER.
And
the results I've gotten with this program
are JUST DOWNRIGHT ASTONISHING...
In
4 rounds of testing the concepts in
this program (about 4 months),
I gained
35 pounds of bodyweight
with a minimal increase in
bodyfat, going from 184 lbs to 219
lbs.
After
focusing the program on deadlifts,
using one of the training techniques,
I gained 7 lbs of bodyweight in
one week and added 60 lbs
to my deadlifting capacity in
just FOUR DAYS (from 365 lbs x 6 reps
to 425 lbs x 6 reps) - CRAZY results!
The
next round through, I targeted my
arms...and gained a PERMANENT half-inch
on them in just 3 weeks! That means
when I went back to more balanced
training, I STILL kept that half-inch
of gains - it wasn't just a temporary
increase because I was focusing on
arms.
One round
I decided to focus on Front Squats...the
first day of the second week, I was
able to do 4 sets with 185 lbs...by
the fifth day of that same week, I did
44 SETS with 185 lbs!
I
focused on my chest in one round and
ended up being able to do sets
of flyes with 120 lb dumbells!
(Naturally,
with weights this heavy, you need to adjust
your form somewhat in order to keep the
tension on the muscles and not overload
the joints - you'll notice in this case,
my elbows are bent more than they would
be with standard flyes with lighter weights.)
I'll tell you right now...in
my ENTIRE 17 years of training, I've NEVER gotten
such amazing results in both strength and muscle mass
this quickly with ANY OTHER TRAINING PROGRAM.
My wife will
back me up on that...every single time I came up from
my basement gym, I was ALWAYS in shock at how well the
program was working. I would open up the door and shake
my head and she would know EXACTLY what I was going
to say...
"Cripes, this is the BEST FREAKING
